The Super Bowl may be visited by the ghost of wardrobe malfunctions past.

Justin Timberlake is reportedly finalizing a deal to perform at the Super Bowl next February, reports US Weekly. A source says that the 36-year-old Timberlake could perform with Jay Z, but added, "as of right now, it will just be Justin — no surprise performers."

There has been no official word from Timberlake's camp or the NFL, so, as of this moment, this remains nothing more than a scurrilous rumor.

It's scurrilous, of course, because Timberlake was involved in one of the most memorable moments in Super Bowl halftime show history back in 2004 when he wrapped up his performance with Janet Jackson by tearing part of her top off, exposing her nipple and breast. The incident became a cultural touchstone and resulted in the FCC implementing a five-second delay during live performances on TV.

There are still legions of Jackson fans who've never forgiven Timberlake for "Nipplegate," so enlisting him to perform for a second time at the country's most-watched sporting event could cause further backlash, a black eye the NFL probably doesn't need as it continues to endure PR battles over the poor health of players and the debate over kneeling during the national anthem.
